Our 40th Reunion was held at Rumours Nightclub on Friday, November 4th, 2011. There were 74 attendees, 2 teachers and 10 guests (see attendee page). 5 classmates joined us later in the evening due to other obligations. They were Kanoe Kaumeheiwa-Miller, Rick Hoo, Odetta Kawakami, Daniel Kurose and Stephen Fujitani.
Classphotos and candids were taken in the Pakele Lounge. Not all attendees made it for the classphotos. It was so wonderful to see that wide eyed, puzzeled expression when a friend is entering, then meeting face to face and the hugging was just too much!!
Classmates moved over to the Rumours Nightclub, where we gathered in a private room. Pastor Russell Higa welcomed everyone. He then read off the list of our friends who had passed, as Harry Kau chanted in the background. A moment of silence was requested to remember our dear friends.
We acknowledged two teachers that attended. We then recognized 7 classmates that made the long journey to come home to be with old friends. They are Phyllis Kaahanui-Colon, Ann Holt Wiltbank, Stanley Lum, Donna Chun-Chang, Larry Lee, Lavonne Lau-Vashon, Lynette Nishida-Kam. Amy Kiriu-Akamine donated their leis, made by RHS students.
Charley Takesuye lined the walls with memorabilia. He displayed 1970 news articles on large boards, a collection of RHS ribbons and RHS t-shirts. He donated the collection of RHS ribbons to Roosevelt High School after our reunion. Lynette Nishida-Kam and Janyce Kaya-Higa made the 20th,25th,30th classphoto board. Harry and Ann Gima hung our '71 RHS banner, and decorated the area with red and yellow balloons and gold streamers. Cheryl Onoye-Kojima worked hard making our senior photo nametags.
The rest of the night was eating, drinking and enjoying the 60's & 70"s music and just "Chilling Out" reminiscing and catching up!
Congratulations to Gaylen Tang who won the grand door prize. He won a beautiful red and yellow feather hatband made by Bert Nakamura ('70's RHS alumni). Now you have to purchase a Lauhala hat. Lucky!
Congratulations to Karen Muraoka-Miyaki who won the next special door prize. She won an authentic poi pounder shaped by Charley Takesuye's father. Lucky!
It was such a wonderful evening with our "Friends for Life"! Special Memories were made that night. It was a celebration of where we met and first bonded.
Mahalo to participants, donators and sponsors. We now have a little more in the kitty, then what we started with, to finance our next events. We also have more classmates interested in helping. We did the groundwork and anyone can now take the lead for upcoming events.
We are always accepting donations, it's better then fundraising. Although, fundraising is another bonding and fun activity for the class. The same excuses are, no time or energy. It's always the same people. Want to encourage Retirees to come out and help with upcoming events. Can't play with your grandkids all day. Reconnect and stay in the loop. Keeps you younger!
Aloha and A Hui Hou! - ..."until we meet again!"
Check out Donna Chun-Chang's video with music of our Reunion and her mini reunions. She didn't waste a minute when she returned. http://vimeo.com/32698592
