Happy 60th Birthday! To our Class of ’71!
It was an incredible night of reconnecting, laughter, memories, and gifts! Over 100 classmates celebrated our 60th birthday on September 1, 2013 at the Honolulu Country Club.
Name tags with our senior year picture helped trigger memories of each other from years past. Before we got too involved in the party mode, the group willingly trooped to the front steps of HCC and took our class picture. Wow! Everyone looked just great!
As people checked in, there was a lot of surprised recognition, mingling, and embracing. Classmates were also busy peeking at their goodie bag, claiming fabulous door prizes, and eating peanuts and poke. Alas, emcee Curt Salcur had to ask that classmates find a seat so we could start the evening.
Our own Pastor Russell Higa blessed our food before we partook in an onolicious array of salads, entrees, and desserts. Those who ate light during the day so they could enjoy the buffet had made a good decision.
It wasn’t easy staying focused on our food while being entertained by the roaming magician’s quick hands and witty humor. With so many years of wisdom under our belt, many of us probably felt that we couldn’t be fooled, but this magician proved us wrong.
A very touching part of the program was the slideshow of our classmates who are physically no longer with us but will always remain in
spirit with the Class of ‘71. Ending this tribute, former Miss Hawaii and fellow classmate Kanoe Kaumeheiwa - Miller graced us with
her hula of “The Prayer.”
Several classmates had an opportunity to have a psychic reading while others gambled their casino chips at the craps and black jack tables. Others took snapshots in the flower power VW van. The dance floor was crowded with electric sliders and twisters.
Our nostalgic centerpieces with vinyl record albums were given to the classmate on the table, whose birthday was closest to our BB date.
Who said we were entering the geriatric generation!? Others spent the evening chatting and reconnecting with old friends and establishing new ones.
After all the grand prizes were given away, we ended our evening in unity. In our closing circle with hands joined, we bid
farewell to one another singing our alma mater and Hawai’i Aloha.
This was an evening to be cherished.
